The Ashes final between Australia and England is set to be the most watched football match of the year, according to a study from the Australian Football League (AFL).
The NRL has already shown its support for the AFL, with a number of games featuring AFL games on its TV schedule, including some of the NRL’s marquee matches.
But now the NRL is taking a similar approach to the Ashes, with the league’s new TV partner BSkyB set to air all three games in the first round of the finals on Saturday night.
This will be the first time that the NRL has aired three games live at the same time since the 2013 NRL grand final between the Sydney Roosters and South Sydney Rabbitohs.ABS-CBN News understands the first game, the final between South Sydney and the Roost, will be screened live from the ABC studio in Melbourne, with an additional two games on the same day as the AFL’s final.
The Roost have won the premiership this year, while South Sydney are currently third in the ladder.
The NRL is hoping to draw crowds of over 80,000 to the stadium in Melbourne when the finals kick-off, and is hoping that fans of the teams in the final will turn out for both games.
