The race for Italy’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification spot is getting a bit more interesting, with the news that defender Mario Balotelli could be in line to make his international debut.
Balotelli, who is still in the final stages of his recovery from a serious ankle injury, could be a player to watch during the next few weeks.
He is one of four players from Serie A to be part of the Italy squad for the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers in Ukraine, Estonia and Belarus.
He could also be a factor in the qualifiers for Russia and Portugal.
A lot has changed since Italy last qualified for a major international tournament, having missed out on qualifying for the 2019 World Cup due to the death of former coach Antonio Conte.
In Italy’s case, the lack of a World Cup final in 2018 and a poor showing at Euro 2016 have not helped the cause of the country.
However, a number of other players have impressed the national team and the squad has improved over the last two years.
Italy has lost to Spain, France, Croatia, Germany and Belgium in their group and will be hoping to win a spot in the quarter-finals.
